As the year rolls over from 2019 into 2020, it is a time for looking back and for looking forward. I set myself some walking objectives at the start of the year, and I guess it is time to review those. I am also looking forward to 2020 with optimism, and the hope that it will be another great year.
Back at the start of 2019, I set myself four objectives:
1. To complete the remaining part of the Chemin de St. Jacques in France and reach St. Jean at the Spanish border.
2. To walk the unofficial Jakobsweg that goes south from Basel to join the official Swiss national Jakobsweg route that I walked a few years ago.
3. To complete at least one marathon
4. To walk more steps than I did in 2018.
On the first one, I completed the walk from Cahors to St. Jean. That was in May. It was 390 km, and I walked it in 13 days. So happily, that one is complete.
I started walking south from Basel back in June, talking the exploration of that Jakobsweg in day stages. I reached Moudon in early December. All the stages are described in the pages here. That means I can chalk that objective up as complete also.
My original target was to complete one marathon. I completed three: Cork City, East Cork Harbour, and Galway. That is another objective successfully completed.
When it comes to walking more steps than I did in 2018, let’s look back over the last three years:
In 2017, I recorded 6,240,638 steps.
In 2018, the figure was 6,369,826.
In 2019, I recorded 6,517,825 steps.
So that objective is also successfully completed.
With success in 2019, the mind turns to 2020. I still have to fully crystallise my thoughts, but I can declare a few things. The journey towards Santiago will go on. There will be more marathons. I will aim to reach at least 6.5 million steps for a second year in a row. I have some other ideas, but they are less definite.
But whatever I do, I will also aim to write about it here. And I hope that people out there will read it.
